Thai Red Basil
Description of the variety
Thai basil (Ocimum basilicum var. thyrsiflora) is distinguished by its deep purple stems, pointed green leaves and small purple-white flowers. It grows up to 45 cm tall. It thrives in warm sunny conditions. Compared to sweet basil, Thai Red Basil offers a more intense flavour with notes of anise and clove.
Planting Guidelines
To grow Thai Red Basil, choose a sunny spot that receives at least 6 – 8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Use well-draining soil enriched with compost or aged manure. Sow seed indoors or directly. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and avoid watering the foliage during hot weather. Pinch off the top leaves regularly to encourage bushy growth and delay flowering.
Additional Remarks
Thai Red Basil thrives in warm, sunny condition.
