Four Season Scallion
Description of the variety
Four season scallion is a non-bulbing perennial onion variety that thrives in temperate climates and is well-suited to container or garden bed cultivation. Its slender green stalks and small white base are edible and packed with flavor, often used fresh in salads, stir-fries, soups, and garnishes. Unlike bulb onions, spring onions grow quickly and can be harvested within 8–12 weeks of sowing. They prefer well-drained, nutrient-rich soil and full sun exposure, though they tolerate partial shade. With proper care, they can be grown year-round in mild climates like Sydney’s, offering a continuous supply of fresh greens.
Planting Guidelines
Choose a sunny spot with well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.0–7.0).
Improve soil with compost or well-rotted manure before sowing.
Sow seeds directly into soil at a depth of 5–6 mm.
Water gently and regularly to keep soil moist but not soggy.
Thin seedlings once they reach 5–10 cm tall.
Protect young plants from snails, slugs, and aphids.
Additional Remarks
Spring onions require low-maintenance. Their quick growth and culinary versatility make them a rewarding crop.
