Long Black Winter Melon

Description of the variety

Long black winter melon is vigorous and resilient, with the first female flower typically appearing around the 18th node of the main vine. The fruits are cylindrical. The fruit is about 60 - 80 cm long and 25 - 30 cm wide. The flesh is white, thick and densely textured, offering a clean, subtle taste.

Planting Guidelines

Black-skinned winter melon seeds have thick seed coats, making germination difficult; soaking is necessary to promote sprouting.

Seeds should be soaked in clean water for 8–12 hours, then drained and dried before placing in a warm, moist environment at 28–30°C for germination.

Seedlings are typically transplanted once they develop 2–3 true leaves.

Planting beds should be about 3 meters wide with double rows on each side, plant spacing approximately 1.5 meters apart.

Use trellises for vine support.

Train vines promptly as they grow and remove excess side shoots to promote healthy development.

Manual pollination during flowering is recommended to improve fruit set.

Prefers warm, heat-tolerant conditions and requires sufficient base and side fertilization.
