White Long bean
Description of the variety
Botanically classified as Vigna unguiculata, Chinese white long bean is a member of the Fabaceae family. Compared to darker green varieties, white long beans are softer in texture and slightly sweeter in taste.
Early maturity, matures 55 days in Spring sowing and 45 days in Summer sowing.
It can be harvested for 30 to 45 days.
The pods are pale green in colour. The pods are about 65 cm long. The average pod length is about 35 gram. The pods are slender, cylindrical, fleshy.
Each pod contains edible cream-colored seeds.
Planting Guidelines
Plant seeds directly into well-drained, fertile soil once the weather warms above 18°C.
Choose a sunny spot and install trellises or supports for vertical growth.
Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep and space them 30–45 cm apart.
Keep the soil moist during germination (7–10 days) and early growth.
Enrich the soil with compost before planting and apply balanced fertilizer every 3–4 weeks.
These beans are drought-tolerant once established but benefit from consistent watering during flowering and fruiting.
Additional Remarks
Chinese white long bean is relatively disease-resistant and thrives in warm, humid conditions.
Harvest pods while they are young and smooth for best flavor and texture—older pods may become fibrous.
The plant’s vigorous growth and high yield make it ideal for commercial growing.
